How Does EFT Work?

Part I
People often ask me how Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) works. They ask because 1) they are skeptical that it works at all, 2) because they are open to the idea and are curious, or 3) because they have had a direct experience of the very positive shifts it can bring about and want a way to articulate what happened to them.
The "Discovery Statement" in EFT is: "The cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body's energy system." By tapping the acupuncture meridians, these disruptions can be reduced or eliminated. There is considerably more to the story, though. I'll talk about just a little piece of it in this short article.
Tapping releases energy blocks and that release allows emotions to shift into more positive states. Yes, indeed! And what happens at the same time is the body shifts and so does the mind. When you are working at the level of energy you can affect body, mind, and emotions all at once and with great efficiency. EFT is truly holistic in this regard, and in fact I consider it to be spiritual in it's essence (not religious, spiritual) because it's effect is so all-encompassing. So, for example, someone may have anxiety about an upcoming important meeting. They will feel anxious. They will also think anxious thoughts. And, if they focus on their body they will be able to locate that anxious feeling as a body sensation as well.
When EFT is applied and the disruption in the energy system is released there is an ease that comes on every level. The feeling of anxiety fades. They will feel empowered and confident. At the same time, the person will be able to think new and clearer thoughts, thoughts that are more creative and optimistic. The tension in their body that was caused by the anxiety will also go away, and they will feel better physically.
I can't begin to tell you all of the incredible things I have seen EFT accomplish! It is truly a modality of miracles. While not every problem can be eliminated quickly, so many can be. And although some issues take longer, usually some kind of progress can be made in a short period of time. Headaches (including migraines), back pain, insomnia, fears and panic, feeling "stuck" about an issue in your life, food addictions, and so much more can all be addressed with EFT. On a daily basis I am seeing the most wonderful changes, and I hope to inspire you to learn EFT if you don't already know it, keep tapping if you do know it, and continue to learn more about what EFT can do for you and those you love.
How Does EFT Work?
Part 2
Precisely how does EFT work? EFT uses tapping on acupuncture meridians to achieve its results. But how do the acupuncture meridians work? If we look to modern science to give us the answer we get stumped. None of the theories are complete enough to answer the question. For one thing, why does it work on resolving pain but also work for a variety of other problems such as addictions, weakness in the immune system, and phobias?
The answer gets even harder to find if you add this to the equation (I'm going to have to ask you to be open minded here). A person can use EFT as a "surrogate" for someone else who has a need, and often there is a positive effect. An example of this is a parent doing EFT on their own body for the benefit of their child. Another example is using EFT on one's own body on an airplane to help a stranger that obviously is in a state of anxiety due to the flight. Another successful use of surrogate EFT is to help animals, who can't tap for themselves. Positive results occur with a frequency that defies the statistical odds for it being just a "coincidence". How can we explain that?
While there have been many insufficient attempts to explain both acupuncture and EFT using a model of the brain and biochemistry I think you have to go beyond that to find an answer to these questions. You have to enter the realm of spirituality or the realm of physics, whichever you prefer. You have to go beyond solid matter into the world of energy and information. Maybe that seems a bit far out, but bear with me. In future articles I’ll write more about this and make it clearer to you, and give you some more ideas to consider.
